Gaining Control
The
attacks on our lives can often seem endless: time and energy requirements of our jobs, the wants and needs of our
children, keeping the family finances on track, making plans for the future. It's no wonder that stress and anxiety
have become one of the largest health care concerns today! Sometimes it seems that the interruptions to our daily routine take
more precedence than even the routine itself. And we wonder why it is so difficult to get anything done!
How do you get around the obstacles that block you? First, you need to accept the fact that there will be obstacles!
In another time and place it may have been different, but as we approach the Millennium, it is obvious that a number
of families are having some level of difficulty in keeping everything under control. For many, it seems to be a
never ending process of "one step forward and two steps back" and a lot of wheel spinning.
Gaining control of your family life does not mean that you need to take an iron handed and unyielding approach
to family relations. Rather, it means taking control of the processes, not necessarily of the family members. It means putting yourself and the family
on a rigorous diet of stress reduction. It means learning to balance the requirements of the job (or, as in many families,
the jobs) with
the needs of the family, allowing work
and family to peacefully co-exist. And yes, gaining control
means setting some rules and learning to live by them, even when the easier route (in the short term)
would be to just let things go their own course.
